Chinese characters are classified into single-component and compound characters according to the number of radicals they contain.

A single-component character consists of only one complete and independent part which is made up of strokes, such as gong, kai, chang. Despite their small proportion in the Chinese characters, single-component characters are used rather frequently. Some are used as a part of a compound character. Therefore, they play an important role in the Chinese characters.

Compound characters are those composed of two or more independent components. Most Chinese characters are compound ones. According to how components form characters in terms of the spatial structure, the characters can be divided into those structured with left and right, upper and lower, inside and outside, and those with special structure. Among them, those structured with left and right and upper and lower account for over 80% of the Chinese characters.

The basic structure of the left-right structured character is as: hao, ming, zhi, wan, shu, and zuo.

The basic structure of up-down structured compound characters is as tai, ye, nan, xing, cha, and jing.

In addition to left-right-structured and up-down-structured characters, there are inside-outside-structured and special structured characters in Chinese. (1) Characters with two surrounding sides: bian, yan, ju, ke, ting and chuang; with three surrounding sides: qu, yi, tong, zhou, xiong, han; with four surrounding sides: hui, guo, yin. (2) Special-structured characters: pin, jing, zuo, cheng.
